Gernika to Lezama
Wow. Another awesome day! Each day is different and there is something about each day that just makes it awesome in a unique way. Just over 18 miles today and not as scenic a route as some of the other days - more time on pavement walking between towns. But we continue to see many of the same people and are starting to feel a bit like a larger group of friends. Some of the Irish group are here with us tonight while more of their group is somewhere else (there are 19 of them so some of the smaller rural places just can’t take them!). Hillary from Yorkshire is here. Peter from Nevada lost out on the last room here and ended up somewhere else. We had a noonish glass of wine in Lezama (about 5 km from the end in Lezama) and Peter had a calf injury so hung out there as we walked ahead to see if there was a room for him here. No luck but he and his friend ended up somewhere nearby.
Muddy, wet trails for much of what was not asphalt today. I slipped on a rock and ended up butt first in the muck. So far the only wipeout of the camino for us. Belly laughs at the place we went for late lunch today as Kerch thought he had ordered dessert and ended up with a ridiculously large bowl of green beans instead. The camino continues to ensure that we make the best choices!!
Our bodies are a bit fatigued today after a week of so many miles and hills but such great conversation and new friends and laughs. The route to Bilbao tomorrow is much shorter and we will get the extra steps exploring the city. Then an extra day in Bilbao as Patrick joins us for a few days!
